South-Ural State Medical University


South Ural State Medical University is a higher medical education institution located in Ekaterinburg, Russia. The Ural State Medical University was established in 1931 as the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute. In 1995 the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute was renamed the Ural State Medical Academy. In 2013 the Ural State Medical Academy was granted university status and renamed the Ural State Medical University. In 2014 the Ural State University was added to the list of the best higher education institutions in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Today the Ural State Medical University has 1050 highly qualified teachers in 78 departments, who train 7800 students in 9 faculties. Ural State Medical University has provided more than 36,000 physicians to the world for 78 years.

Yekaterinburg - Features

Yekaterinburg is located about 1,800 km east of Moscow, near its border with Europe, on the eastern slopes of the Central Urals of Asia, in the floodplain of the Izet River. Since the Ural Mountains are so ancient, there are no significant mountains in the city.

This relief was a favorable condition for the construction of major transport routes from central Russia to Siberia (Siberian route and the Trans-Siberian Railway) via Yekaterinburg. As a result, it has become one of Russia's most important strategic centers, still providing a link between the European and Asian parts of the country.

Yekaterinburg is located on the border of the temperate and continental climates. It is characterized by sharp variations in weather conditions with well-defined seasons. The Ural Mountains, despite their low altitude, block the passage of air masses from the western part of Russia.

As a result, the Central Urals are open to the invasion of cold Arctic winds and continental winds of the western Siberian plains. At the same time, the warm air masses of the Caspian Sea and the deserts of Central Asia can enter this region freely from the south.

That is why the city is characterized by sharp temperature fluctuations and the formation of climatic anomalies: from severe frosts in winter to thaw and rain, from temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius in summer to frosts. The average temperature in January is minus 12.6 degrees Celsius, in July - an additional 19 degrees Celsius.

The city has a very unfavorable environmental condition due to air pollution. In 2016, Yekaterinburg was added to the list of Russian cities with the worst environmental conditions by this indicator. Car pollution accounts for more than 90% of all pollution.
